PRESS RELEASE - SIGNAL HILL ALUMNI CHOIR 20 th ANNIVERSARY

The Auditorium of Queen's Hall in St. Ann's will be filled with the sound of music when the Signal Hill Alumni Choir celebrates its twentieth anniversary with two performances on Saturday April 9 th and Sunday April10 th 2005.

Under the distinguished patronage of His Excellency Professor George Maxwell Richards, the celebration begins with a Gala reception on Saturday evening for which The Samaroo Jets will provide live entertainment as a prelude to the concert. On Sunday there will be a matinee. The Marionettes Chorale and the Lydian Singers will make guest appearances at both performances and Leroy Clarke will treat patrons to recitations of his poetry on the opening night.

Inarguably the country's most outstanding folk ensemble, the Signal Hill Alumni Choir is a continuation of the all-conquering Signal Hill Senior Comprehensive School Folk Choir, which had been extremely successful in the National Biennial Music Festival. In 1982 the original school choir made a clean sweep of all awards in the various classes and its overwhelming success prompted the formation of an Alumni.

In 1984 the Choir was established with a core of past students and specially selected friends, under the direction of John Arnold. In the Music Festival of that year, they staked claim to the Louis Blanche Fraser Cup for the best choir (20 singers and under), the San Fernando Trophy for the Best Folk Mass, the Edward Beetham Shield for the Best Folk Song Choir (over 20 singers) and the Olive Walke Memorial Trophy for the Most Outstanding Choir. Thus began their love affair with the general public and cultural aficionados. Signal Hill continues to win rave reviews and has graduated from the Music Festival to showcase a varied repertoire to local and international audiences.

The choir will use the occasion to launch a commemorative double CD. Produced by Sanch Electronix Limited, the album features a previously unreleased repertoire of gospel, folk, contemporary, reggae and calypso genres. To complete the experience works of two well-known Tobagonian artists Mr. Edward Hernandez and Dr. James Armstrong will be showcased and offered for sale.

Tickets may be purchased at the following locations: Terminix Limited (622.5001), Richmond Street, Port of Spain, Sanch Electronix Limited (663.1384), Riverside Road Curepe, the Copyright Organisation of Trinidad and Tobago offices in Port of Spain (624.2688), San Fernando (657.2688) and Tobago (635.2688) from Monday March 14, 2005 and the Queen's Hall Box Office, from Monday March 28,2005. Part proceeds will be given to The COTT Foundation and The Music Literacy Trust.
