CULTURAL RHYTHMS - A UWI FUND-RAISER
"Cultural Rhythms 1" is the theme chosen for a fund-raiser to be hosted by the University of the West Indies (UWI) Development and Endowment Fund and the Alumni Association on the office grounds of the Campus' principal in St Augustine on Sunday, September 5, from 10 am to 3 pm.
The collaborative effort will be staged under the patronage of President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Professor George Maxwell Richards, and will showcase the cultural diversity of the Caribbean through exhibitions of musical, culinary and artistic talent.
The impressive musical line-up includes performances by US-based artistes Ron Reid, Orville Wright and David "Happy" Williams, along with local entertainers Tej Ramlogan (East/West Indian fusion), Lord Relator (Willard Harris) (traditional calypso/extempo music) and the Neal and Massy Trinidad All Stars Steel Orchestra.
New York-based consultant chef and food stylist Jacqueline Danclair will showcase her latest food creations on the occasion. She has promised that the fare will feature "French food with a multi-cultural influence that is definitely Caribbean." Beautiful art creations by the University's own Shastri Maharaj, Elsa Clarke and Camille King will be on exhibition. The pieces, along with other commemorative memorabilia, will be on sale.
The project's mission is to create a cultural product that will be unique to the University of the West Indies and adaptable to the needs of the other Campuses. It also seeks to enhance the positive image of the institution. Its objective is to raise funds that would provide the people of the English-speaking Caribbean with greater opportunities to access tertiary-level education through scholarships and bursaries, allow for plant upgrading and enhancement of facilities, and support the efforts of the Alumni Association, which will in turn augment the endeavours of the University. The initiative was conceptualized by Sanch Electronix Limited of Riverside Road, Curepe.
"The fund-raising target is $100,000," said the firm's managing director Simeon Sandiford. "We intend to make every effort to achieve our objective, and to take the programme to the other UWI Campuses in Barbados and Jamaica. Therefore, we are appealing to the alumni and the corporate community to lend support to the effort."
A lucky patron at the event will win a return ticket, courtesy American Airlines, to any North American destination to which the carrier flies. In addition, Sanch will provide amplification for All Stars' performance, as well as have on display between 500 and 600 CD titles which patrons may purchase.
Tickets are priced at $300 each, and are available at selected branches of Republic Bank Limited, the Alumni Association and Sanch Electronix.
